Let's talk hormones.
ā
If you're new around here, this might feel a little out of the blue- but if you've been around for a while, you know my hormone balance journey has been long and winding and it's something I LOVE to talk about from time to time, because balancing my hormones has been a GAME changer (to put it lightly) in living a balanced life.
ā
My hormone balance journey started, like most of us, way back in Middle School, when my hormones first starting shifting- a lot earlier than some other girls, too. Almost immediately I had horrible symptoms that came along with my periods- they were crazy irregular and when they did come they were super long and painful. I had cystic acne right away that would last all month, and it felt like no skincare product on the market could touch. I also started to become conscious about my body, as I gained a whole bunch of weight all at once- which is, in many ways normal for girls going through puberty, but I never really evened out- I just kept gaining.
We chalked it up to me being young and I was told things would eventually balance out- which they never really did, until I went on the pill when I was a late teen, which helped a bit- but all my symptoms came back, seemingly with a vengeance as soon as I went off of it when we wanted to start our family.
Thankfully, I was able to get pregnant with my oldest fairly quickly- beginner's luck, perhaps- but my pregnancy was difficult to say the least, rife with complications and anxiety, and after a discovery during delivery (I'll spare you the gory details), it was VERY clear things were NOT right with my hormones.
ā
Flash forward a few years, after trying to diet my way to a healthier life over and over (spoiler alert: didn't work), my cycles were even more irregular and painful than they had ever been, I was buying expensive makeup to cover my fresh acne and scars (now appearing in fun places like my chest and back- cute, right?), my moods were out of whack (my husband can surely attest to this one) I was CRAZY tired all the time-- and we wanted to try for another baby.
After months of trying to no avail, I sought out the help of my nurse practitioner midwife, my GP, a naturopath and a nutritionist. We did a bunch of tests, come to find out I fit all of the diagnostic criteria for PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) but because I wasn't obese, it wasn't caught before- as in, the entire fifteen years prior.
Long story short- 3/4 of those practitioners told me there was nothing they could do for me because I didn't need to lose weight and didn't qualify for blood sugar lowering medication. š¤Æ
So I would, what- have to live with these symptoms the rest of my life?! I couldn't get behind it.
ā
Now, I know not all of you reading this have PCOS- but you may have experienced other hormone imbalances- irregular cycles, crazy PMS, endometriosis, unexplained weight gain, fertility struggles... whatever you're going through, I can promise you, there IS something you can do.
While working with practitioners is essential (and this is not my area of expertise), lifestyle factors play a HUGE role in balancing our hormones- and balancing your hormones might actually be even simpler than you might think, something I learned from the incredible Dr. Heather Rhodes when I connected with her earlier this year.
Learning to balance my blood sugar, reduce my stress, ditch the excessive amounts of caffeine I was using to keep myself energized and eat for my hormones were THE keys to balancing my hormones, naturally, no medical interventions needed (but girl, please be assured- these are all things you can do in conjunction with medical intervention, as well- I support it all!).
Which is why connecting with Dr. Heather was SO huge- after we shared stories, we immediately started dreaming up the cookbook both of us needed during our journey to hormone balance- one that is not only full of delicious recipes, but family-friendly, weeknight-doable, and fully supportive of your hormone balance- without restriction (yes, you get to eat CARBS!)-- and she's pairing it with a class that outlines her specific and strategic nutrition plan for hormone balance. Are you excited yet?!
We have been working on this project for MONTHS and it is FINALLY going to be available for you to jump on this upcoming MONDAY- so mark your calendars for 9am EST Monday, August 23rd to grab the Happier Hormones Cookbook and Masterclass Bundle-- get on the waitlist, here!
I can't wait to connect you with Dr. Heather's incredible strategies- and my delicious recipes so you can finally get those hormones into balance, and feel as good as you can!
Catch you on Monday!

It's Day 5 of Smoothie Week! I drink a LOT of smoothies, and if there is any smoothie I make more than any others, it's this peanut butter and 'jelly' protein smoothie! It's not only delicious- this balance of sweet and protein and healthy fats always keeps me full and energized for HOURS- exactly what I need for my busy mama life. Scroll down for the recipe- feel free to replace the peanut butter with cashew butter or sunbutter. PB&J Protein Smoothie : 1/2 cup (heaping) frozen mixed berries...
It's Day 4 of Smoothie Week! Today's recipe features another potentially unexpected ingredient... but don't knock it til you try it! The combination of strawberries + dates + cottage cheese (yes, cottage cheese!) tastes like you are drinking strawberry cheesecake- it's my latest obsession! Of course, you can always replace the cottage cheese with vanilla protein powder-- but it's not the same, trust me! I love cottage cheese as one of my favorite inexpensive protein powder-free ways to get in...
It's Day 3 of Smoothie Week! Today I'm featuring a smoothie with one of my favorite warm-weather fruits- peaches- and TWO veggies-- spinach and zucchini (yes, zucchini!). I love to freeze zucchini that might be wilting a little in the fridge- it makes your smoothie creamy (without adding a whole banana) and adds a fiber and nutrient boost! I call this one Peaches n' Greens (you know, like Peaches and Cream... you get the gist š). Peaches nā Greens: 3/4 cup frozen peaches 1/2 cup frozen...
